The Bible remains the best guide to visit this beautiful and troubled
country. The Land is constantly compared to the Book and the
Book to the Land and it is not known whether one is the illustration
of the other or the contrary. Here, we celebrate their consonance;
there, we are dismayed by their dissonance. We often succumb to
baffling and biting disappointment, resulting from the disparity
between the greatness of the Biblical memories and the
shabbiness of the sites: “Palestine”, declared a great traveler, “is a
library of Revelation engraved in stones.”
